As course instruction increases online, the role and reach of the library and librarians are evolving. How do you get started in supporting your online students, and what can you expect when you embed as a librarian in an online course? Join librarians from Penn State who recently began an embedded librarianship pilot and hear about their experience in getting an embedded librarian program off the ground and onto the internet. Learn from their successes and challenges as they detail the many aspects of providing library support to online students, including both the expected and the surprising results they found after the first year embedding online.

Presenter biographies:

Victoria Raish is the Online Learning Librarian, based at Penn State University Park. Torrie delivers library instruction from orientation to higher-level thinking about information literacy to all online students. In addition, she serves as a liaison to many of the instructional design shops on campus and helps the library with their online learning initiatives.

Lori Lysiak is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Penn State Altoona and is a liaison to faculty in several disciplines including history, business, and engineering. Lori’s experience in online education includes teaching online credit-bearing courses and being an embedded librarian. She is currently embedded in two Penn State World Campus political science courses that range from low-level engagement to high-level engagement.

Emily Mross is the Business Librarian at Penn State Harrisburg. She supports on campus and online in business and related disciplines.

Emily, Lori, and Victoria collaborated on an embedded librarian pilot for Penn State World Campus Online Courses beginning in Fall 2016.
