Specific Education and Experience Requirements:

Prior experience working effectively with children and coordinating and presenting programs for children and youth is essential. Good Computer and Internet skills needed. Required to have a valid driver’s license and own personal transportation.
General and Physical Requirements:
Must be a team player, a self-starter, and feel comfortable handling a variety of tasks including interacting with staff, volunteers and the public. Willingness to adapt to changes in the workplace needed. Requires enthusiasm, a high regard for children and teens and a genuine commitment to customer service. Experience with children’s literature, storytelling and library skills a plus. Candidates must be reliable, have a professional demeanor and enjoy using computers and technology applications. Requires patron confidentiality. Requires physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift, push and carry library materials (20 to 25 lbs).
Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Plans, publicizes and implements weekly story times for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, special programs for children and youth and the annual Summer Reading Program.
2) Visits schools and preschools to actively promote Summer Reading Activities.
3) Facilitates library tours for preschools, school classes and scout troops.
4) Recruits and trains teen volunteers and adult volunteers for special programs.
5) Works with the Director in building and maintaining a useful Children’s Collection.
6) Participates in reader’s advisory and reference for patrons of all ages.
7) Assists at the circulation desk as needed. This may include using an item scanner, the Millennium computer database and other equipment.
8) Assists patrons with locating library materials by using the computer card catalog.
9) Informs patrons of Library policies and rules and enforces these.
10) Gathers program statistics and prepares reports as needed.
11) Participates in training, library committees and meetings as needed.

The director will be responsible for continuing the excellent service to our community while promoting and implementing a forward-looking vision as we progress and grow in our vital role as a community resource center.
The director will partner with the Board of Trustees and lead a dedicated, experienced staff and core of volunteers. As we grow and evolve to meet the 21st century needs of those we serve, the director must be able to work well with a multi-cultural and economically diverse population living within and around this small city in scenic Chester County, PA, located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia.
The Coatesville Area Public Library functions as an independent community resource. However, as a member of the Chester County Library System, we are also a strong link in this federated system composed of a District Center Library and 17 member libraries. The federation offers strength and support to each individual library as they work to meet their unique goals.
