The Pennsylvania Library Association is a member centered organization which depends on the enthusiasm and dedication of our members to carry out its annual goals and ongoing initiatives. 

PaLA offers many opportunities for leadership and volunteer service within the association all over the Commonwealth and in a variety of capacities. Volunteers are always needed in the Chapters, Divisions, Roundtables and Committees. 

Chapters

Chapters are eight geographic units within the Association.  When a person joins the Association, they are assigned to the chapter based upon the county in which they work.   Chapter membership is a mix of library type and professional interests.  Each chapter has an executive committee made up of a chair, chair-elect, secretary/treasurer, nominations chair, publicity chair, and membership chair.  Each chapter's executive committee may also have other members to help with special activities.   Chapters also have educational and social activities which require volunteers.

Divisions

Divisions are units of the association which are based upon the types of library or types of library affiliation.  Current Divisions of the Association are College and Research, Public Library, Youth Services, Special Librarians, and Trustee.  Each Division is governed by a chair and executive committee.  Divisions also plan educational and social activities which require volunteers.

Round Tables

Round Tables are units of the association which are based upon the specific focus of interests of the membership.  Round Tables are governed by a chair and may plan additional educational and social activities and distribute information specifically associated with the area of interest. 

Committees

Committees are either standing or ad hoc.  Standing committees of the Association include Awards, Intellectual Freedom, Membership, Nominations, PR/Marketing.  Ad hoc committees are appointed by the President of the Association and may have a very specific project and deadline or it may run for multiple years.
