PaLA will be the premier advocate for Pennsylvania libraries.


PaLA strengthens Pennsylvania’s libraries through advocacy, education and leadership.

We foster innovation and collaboration, nurture library leaders, and promote the value of libraries.

Goal #1: To provide leadership in focused, effective and credible advocacy for PA libraries.

Key Objectives:
1. To expand PA Forward as the basis for state and local advocacy.
2. To provide resources and training to develop relationship-building skills with decision makers.
3. To advocate for sustainable library funding on the state, local, and federal levels.
4. To advocate for the value of librarians and libraries.

Goal #2: To spearhead effective membership recruitment, engagement and retention

Key Objectives:
1. To clearly communicate the value of personal, institutional, and commercial membership.
2. To expand outreach to academic librarians.
3. To embrace new membership ideas and empower peer-to-peer membership recruitment and retention.
4. To build meaningful connections among new librarians, library students, and existing members.
5. To strengthen Chapters (Membership, Advocacy, Communication, Programming and Leadership).

Goal #3: To provide high-quality professional development opportunities

Key Objectives:

1. To provide a strong statewide conference for professionals, para-professionals, and library trustees.
2. To deepen the PA Academy of Leadership Studies (PALS) experience.
3. To increase the number, quality, and variety of delivery methods for professional development programs provided by Chapters, Divisions and Roundtables.
4. To increase networking opportunities for members and prospective members.
5. To develop and maintain a statewide speakers bureau directory.

Goal #4: To assure strong external and internal communications

Key Objectives:

1. To provide timely and relevant communication and content concerning PaLA activities and initiatives for our members and the public.
2. To leverage technology to strengthen communications streams.
3. To enhance communications between and among PaLA groups and members to foster new leadership and maintain continuity of institutional history.

Goal #5: To assure strong, efficient and accountable association management

Key Objectives:
1. To evaluate organizational structure in response to strategic goals and objectives.
2. To secure organizational sustainability and growth through cost control and creative revenue generation.
3. To foster forward-looking leadership to assure a proactive response to association and member needs.
4. To create a succession plan for association staff and leadership
