Kim Cowell

Name: Kim Cowell

Title: Preschool Program Specialist and Graduate Assistant for the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology at Kutztown University

Library/Organization: Berks County Public Libraries and Kutztown University

Address: Kutztown PA 19530

Phone: 484-793-5484

Email: kcowell36@gmail.com

Areas of Expertise: I am able to speak as a Preschool Teacher and Preschool Program Specialist (for the Berks County Public Libraries). My most recent speech was about integrating an iPad into a preschool story time at a library. I love using my iPad for behind-the-scenes work and to enhance or reinforce a lesson during a story time! I would love the opportunity to speak about the many ways you can integrate an iPad into any storytime and how many ways it can assist you with keeping in touch with the families you serve, making handouts, and being your "idea keeper."

Target Audience: Public Libraries, School Libraries, Children's Services, Support Staff

Brief Biography: I am the mother of three children. For many years, I supplemented their education at home with lessons, projects, and creative endeavors. A few years ago, I began teaching preschool and volunteering in the elementary library in my hometown. I now travel for Berks County Public Libraries, giving preschool lessons in libraries around the county. The story times are filled with stories, music, crafts, and fun! I am also back in school to earn a Master’s Degree in Library Science and am the Graduate Assistant which involves helping to organize the events the department has, updating the website, and publishing our newsletter.

Availability: I prefer to work during the hours of 8:00 AM- 2:00 PM. If that is a problem, just let me know and I will adjust my schedule.

Geographic Range: Lehigh Valley

Speaking Experience: I have been speaking in front of students and parents for many years. Both as a teacher, assistant teacher (I sub for Kutztown Elementary School), and for our University events (most recently for our Fall Book Review). I also helped coach my daughter when she participated in the Optimist Oratorical Contest for three years. She progressed each year and was the tri-state winner in her final year. I would love the opportunity to teach others in the field how to give story times and incorporate a little bit of technology into the lessons to enhance, embellish, and reinforce lessons.
