Wes Roberts - Senior Librarian / Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Job & Career Education Center

Posted By Charity Leonette, Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Speaker:  Wes Roberts, Senior Librarian Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Job & Career Education Center

Area/s of Expertise:

  • Libraries and job/career centers and programs
  • computer education and programs
  • general adult programming
  • eBook technology and how to use it
  • I'm good at diving into new topics, doing the research, and presenting on what I learned.

Target Audience/s:

  • Public Libraries
  • Adult Services
  • Library Administrators & Management
  • Computer/Electronic Resources
  • Library Instructors

About this Speaker:

I began my professional career as a student of sociology. I received a Master's degree in that field, and then taught for several years at the university level, developing a variety of classes and learning a lot about teaching and speaking in public. I intended to pursue a PhD, but became disillusioned by academia, and decided to try the world of libraries.

I worked as a Library Assistant at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and after receiving my MLIS in 2010, I attained my current position as Senior Librarian in charge of CLP's Job & Career Education Center.

My previous experience as a sociologist has really helped me in my role as a librarian, career development facilitator, instructor, and manager, as I approach my library work with an eye for theory and philosophy, and I am also sensitive to the need for using data to make sense of what we do. I'm considering finalizing the PhD idea later in life, perhaps in something related to public policy or labor economics.

Availability:  I would just need to coordinate around my regular work schedule, which is usually 9-5 M-F. I have flexibility coming and going from work as long as my department is covered and I don't have meetings.

Previous Speaking Experience:

I taught university classes at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and St. Vincent College for a total of three years. Alex Heckert (724-357-2731) can speak to that experience. I've given many talks at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, including a series of exhaustive trainings on ebook technology to over 600 Allegheny County librarians, and summarized those trainings at the 2011 PaLA conference. Sarah Beasley (412-921-2521) can confirm that experience. I also provide frequent staff trainings on job resources and general computer resources to CLP staff, and have even begun doing job trainings in the Allegheny Jail. My manager, Sheila Jackson (412-622-3110), can confirm that.

Presenter at PaLA Annual Conference:  2011

Geography:  Juniata-Conemaugh, Northwest, Southwest
