Description

Bibs n' Books and Wee Reads are weekly storytimes for young children from ages 0-5 which develop early literacy skills through books, songs, and fingerplays/movement games.

Curiosity Club is a weekly STEM program for school-aged children in which they learn new scientific concepts while doing experiments or making crafts. 

These events are free of charge.

Book Craft Monthly

Fire Safety At Home - Planning for a Safe Retreat

Invite a local fireman (from the Wilcox Volunteer Fire Department) to explain fire safety at home and how to create an escape plan that would work best for attendees. Open to all ages. Event is free of charge.

Preschool Story Time

Description

This program is designed for caregivers and children to interact during a story time and craft making. There is emphasis put on the basic literacy skills such as holding a book in the proper way, reading from left to right, and printed words. The caregivers help their children complete a craft based on the theme of the week. The cost to the library is less than $10 per week to secure craft materials.

Family Fun Reading Fair

Description 

This was a free activity fair for children ages preschool through second grade and their families. Several activity stations were available, enhancing pre- and early reading skills - including Giant Candyland, large letter blocks, letter art, sing-alongs, and a book giveaway.

This was a volunteer supported event through a partnership with the Upper Perkiomen Family Literacy Project. Volunteers were from the library, local non-profits, and active and retired teachers.

Storytime Yoga

Description 

The Youth Services Coordinator conducts Storytime Yoga biweekly at both the New Kensington and Lower Burrell locations. Children, one to six years of age, listen to a story that inspires movement and then perform both traditional and inspired yoga moves. This program ties into PA Forward's basic and health literacies.

2019 PA One Book: Barnyard Banter Story Time and Craft

Description 

Special guest Steven Bomze joined us for a barnyard-themed story time and craft, celebrating the PA One Book. Steven uses both a wheelchair and an iPad to communicate inclusion and tolerance. This program was co-sponsored by CIS (Community Integrated Services), a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals with special needs get involved and work to better their community.

Life Lessons from Chicken Girl - Author Event

Description  

Author Bonnie Rosario, originally from the Boyertown area, wrote Chicken Girl. This story talks about Bonnie's experience caring for chickens when she was a young girl. The author  read the book, had a discussion around life experiences and completed a small craft with attendees. She also had copies of her book available for purchase, autographing copies as well.

This program engages students in a reading challenge where they each receive a passport and have to check out and read books tied into a number of genres.  The program encourages they to make connections to everyday life and to have discussion around the different types of writing and subject matters covered.

Book Club

Description  

This is a monthly book club meeting the library host year-round. Our members are retired and working adults. We use book kits provided by our District Library. We also use other books at the request of our members. We read varied genres and authors, exploring different themes and avenues for discussion. There aren't any costs outside of staff time and the use of library space for this program.
