Climate Change: Our Relationship with Nature

Description

We may have entered a new period in geological history where humans dominate the Earth with uncertain consequences—the “Anthropocene.” How did we get to this point? Are we failing our sister and brother species? Where do we go from here? This program will include an informal talk by Dr. Spence Stober of Alvernia University with time for questions and discussions afterward.

 

Presenter Bio: Dr. Spencer S. Stober is a Professor of Biology at Alvernia University in Reading, PA. He has taught Biology for 30 years including undergraduate courses in genetics, botany, and environmental science. In 2005 he received Alvernia’s Christian R. & Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching, and he was awarded the Neag Professorship in 2011. Dr. Stober currently serves on the Advisory Board for the “On Sustainability Research Network” sponsored by Common Ground Publishing. Dr. Stober recently served as a co-editor with Dr. David Humphreys for a volume entitled Transitions to Sustainability: Theoretical Debates for a Changing Planet, and he co-authored Nature-centered Leadership: An Aspirational Narrative, with two Ph.D. students (Tracey L. Brown and Sean J. Cullen.

 

This event is targeted toward adults and is free of charge.

Cutting the (Cable) Cord

Description

This event was hosted to assist individuals interested in learning more about how to decrease their cable bills. The session highlighted alternatives to cable including the basics of streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc), how to determine which option is best for your household and included an open dialogue around the pros and cons of any of the services. The presenter was with Main Line Night School. The event was geared toward adults and cost the library about $150 to host.

Retirement Education Seminar

Description

This seminar was put on by LPL Financial, which does regular, free seminars at libraries, churches, senior centers, etc. The presentation covers how to secure retirement funding and what to do if an individual doesn't have that funding (or a plan in place). The program is geared toward adults and is free of charge.

Summertime Yoga

Description

Through a partnership between our library and a local yoga instructor, we offered two programs - Chill & Flow Yoga, which is gentle enough for beginners, and Lunchtime Power Vinyasa for those with more experience and flexibility. See attached flier for specifics. 

The library did not charge for use of the space and the instructor was paid by participant donations.

America's First Daughter - Fall Book Discussion Series

As participants in Lebanon County Reads, patrons are offered the opportunity to participate in many library and committee events between August 6 - November 13, 2018. Richland Community Library is hosting a book discussion as a part of our Fall Series. Patrons may reserve/pick up a copy of print, audio, and e-book materials at any library in Lebanon County and join us on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the inaugural title – America’s First Daughter by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie.


This program is supported by a partnership with Lebanon County Reads, Lebanon County Libraries, Congregation Beth Israel, and the Bishop Foundation.


Note, we were gifted five regular print, one large print, and one audiobook version of the book by Congregation Beth Israel. If we had had to purchase, the copies would have cost about $170. Outside of staff time and participation, there aren’t any other costs involved in hosting the event.

Meyersdale Public Library celebrates African American History Month

Description

Author Lynn Bowman presented a power-point program about regional African-American history, based on her book "Everyone Counts -- A History of African-American Enslavement in Allegany County, Maryland." (Our library is located near the Maryland border.) The author included information about a local African-American veteran of the U.S. Civil War who was recently honored by our local historical society and G.A.R. Post.

Join Bedtime Math's Crazy 8s, an over-the-top after-school club for children in first and second grade designed to get kids fired up about math. It's math gone wild!

Introduction to Monologue Writing

Description

Calling all storytellers! In this course we will learn how to develop exciting characters and write compelling monologues for the stage. Over the course of three workshops, students will be guided through a series of creative prompts that will unleash their inner dramatist as we explore the elements of dramatic writing. Through reading and discussing monologues by some of the most fascinating contemporary playwrights working today, students will leave the course with a better understanding of how to capture an audience’s imagination through the words of just one character.

Cruise into Kindergarten

Cruise into Kindergarten is an interactive story time which features stories, music, creative play and exploration and supports School Readiness and the PA Pre-K Standards for literacy, math, science and many other skills. This is a six-week series and pre-registration is required. The program supports PA Forward's Basic Literacy.  The library hosted this program in the spring of 2018.

Balance for Seniors

Dr. Kyoko Yamada volunteers her time and presents information about the effects of aging on balance, fitness & gait (or the way a person walks). Attendees learn some important daily exercises to maintain balance, fitness & prevent falls. This program supports PA Forward's Health Literacy.
