LIBRARIES AWARDED FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO YOUTH WITH 2018 PA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION BEST PRACTICES AWARDS; INDIAN VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY PROGRAM RECEIVES DAVID J. ROBERTS EXCEL AWARD

Honors Announced during Carolyne L. Smith Best Practices in Early Learning Breakfast as Part of 2018 PA Library Association Annual Conference

(Harrisburg – October 15, 2018) – The Pennsylvania Library Association’s 2018 Annual Conference is in full swing in Harrisburg and today’s activities kicked off with the Carolyne L. Smith Best Practices in Early Learning Breakfast.

Since 2004, Pennsylvania libraries have been recognized for their exceptional services to youth (birth to 18) with the Best Practices Award. Winners (and honorable mentions) are selected, by committee, in the following eight categories: Display & Design, High School, Infant/Toddler, STEM, School Age, Preschool, Middle School, and Family/Multi-generational.

“The committee worked arduously selecting the award winners and honorable mentions from more than 50 applications this year,” said Caralee Sommerer, Senior Librarian with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and chair of this year’s Best Practices Awards Committee. “We chose winners that embodied the PA Forward literacies in their programs, sparked creativity, had a unique community collaboration and was engaging to audiences.”

The 2018 awardees and honorable mentions are:

  • Winner: Discovery Den - Tyrone Snyder Public Library (Lana Conrad & Jennifer Powell)
  • Honorable Mention: All the Feels - Moon Township Public Library (Heather Panella)

  • Honorable Mention: Reflections of Me - Monroeville Public Library (Hope Benson, Carla White, Nicole Henline)

Additionally, one library was honored with the David J. Roberts EXCEL (Excellence in Childhood Early Learning) Library Service Award. Selected from the entire group of best practices winners, the award represents the "Best of the Best" practices for library early learning, showcasing the most creative and/or influential program for early learning in libraries. This year’s awardee is the Indian Valley Public Library for their Teddy Bear Time or Taming the 2's program.

This award is named for former Association President Dave Roberts, who believed in the power of recognition when demonstrating the value libraries bring to their communities. The Best Practices Breakfast is named for Carolyn L. Smith, an advocate for Pennsylvania’s libraries. Carolyn and Dave worked with the Association early on to raise the profile of Pennsylvania libraries by highlighting the role libraries long have played encouraging parents to read to kids and to get kids reading early on their own. Their work with the Association’s PR & Marketing Committee led to the creation of the Best Practices Awards, a precursor to the development of PA Forward.

For more information about the Association’s Best Practices Awards, visit https://www.palibraries.org/page/Celebrate?.

The Association’s Conference runs October 14 through 17 at the Hilton in downtown Harrisburg. For more information, visit https://www.palibraries.org/page/2018ConfInfo.
