Getting Started with Presenting

By no means a comprehensive list of places to present on your accomplishments or topics you have researched, this list illustrates the range of local, regional, national, international, and virtual conferences and training sites for library professionals. Most descriptions are paraphrased from the publication’s website and insights into publishing with that source are offered when possible.

Talk with your colleagues to find out where they have presented and what advice they have for getting your proposal accepted. It is important to familiarize yourself with the scope and audience of the conference or training before submitting your proposal. This information is typically included in the organization’s call for proposals. It is beneficial to attend a few different conferences before deciding to jump into presenting yourself. Attending at least one conference before deciding to submit a proposal to that organization helps you better understand what they are seeking, at least until you become a seasoned veteran.

Other presentation opportunities in your community may include:

  • local cable access channels;
  • local organizations such as Rotary, social services, or business associations; and
  • planning presentations at your own library.
