Publishing: Getting Started

Getting Started with Publishing

The best advice on publishing is to look for publications that match your interests and just do it. At the very least, the information one gets from a rejection helps tighten writing so that publication is easier the next go-round. Here are some tidbits gathered by the 2012 PALS group on Publishing and Presenting:

  • Join mailing lists to receive relevant calls for proposals:
  • Networking - Talk to your colleagues to find out about other opportunities and to seek advice on writing proposals, successfully getting published, and making memorable presentations.

  • Don’t be afraid to set up your own classes and presentations, and send emails to interested parties and listservs. It’s good practice for "real” presentations.

  • Explore opportunities outside the library profession.

    • Publishing Outside the Library Literature "Pedagogical Journals,” by the ACRL Instruction Section Research & Scholarship Committee
