President's Welcome

President's Welcome

Welcome to the Pennsylvania Library Association! I am both humbled and honored to be serving as your President this year. I am also very excited for the work we have ahead, and I hope you, too, are excited about what 2018 holds.

As I’m sure you are well aware, the mission of the Pennsylvania Library Association is to “strengthen Pennsylvania’s libraries through advocacy, education and leadership.

We foster innovation and collaboration, nurture library leaders, and promote the value of libraries.” I love the word “strengthen” because that is what each of us and our libraries do within our own communities. It wonderful to have the Pennsylvania Library Association as our community to help strengthen all of us so that we can continue to do such great work.

This year, we will continue to focus on our three strategic priorities from 2017:

Financial sustainability through membership.

Membership matters. Probably more than ever before. This past year, we decided to increase our membership dues. This was done with careful deliberation and in the end, we decided an increase was necessary. Membership dues have remained the same for a very long time, so these modest increases were in many ways overdue. Your membership is what sustains the Pennsylvania Library Association, not only financially, but also in how much our members share their talents in a variety of volunteer opportunities.

Clear communications.

We have been and will continue to work very hard to be more effective and transparent with our communications. This website continues to be improved, and is now mobile friendly. We are able to get more involvement from our membership through better technology to supplement our in-person meetings with virtual connections with our committees, board, and each. Coffee with Christi has been a very successful and helpful platform. We are also more efficient in how we communicate information out to our membership through a variety of means--chapters/divisions, email, website, listservs, The Bulletin, and more.

Greater awareness and visibility.

Advocacy, education, and leadership are not only three major benefits of membership, but these are also the means to create greater awareness and visibility. Just as membership matters, our stories matter and will have an impact. The Pennsylvania Library Association will continue to advocate on behalf of libraries and educate all on the wonderful benefits of libraries in our communities, but we cannot do these without you. So, we are also educating our members and developing library leaders across the state. We are also reaching out to you for your stories, because your stories are the best thing we have in our advocacy toolkit!

If you aren’t currently a member, I invite you to join us. If you are a member, I thank you for your continued support and am grateful that you believe in the importance of the Pennsylvania Library Association. Join us! Join in the conversations we are having. Join in the work we are doing to advance libraries across our great state.  Join us in learning more and becoming fine leaders within our association, our communities, and our state. Join us and together we will bring PA Forward!

Best wishes,

Tina Hertel
