Library Type Public Cost and Funding: $0 Partnership: Lehigh Valley Therapy Dogs Description: Monthly Books ‘n’ Barks. Read to the Lehigh Valley Therapy dogs with teacher librarian Sue Monroe at the public library, held the fourth Thursday of every month at 6:30pm. This is a reading program for K-grade 3. Therapy pets allow children to focus on the animal instead of feeling self-conscious themselves. This program is a therapeutic distraction technique that relieves children of their worries, which helps their performance when reading. The event is innovative and adds value to the curriculum because these visits help foster a love of literacy among the children. Adults such as parents, tutors, or teachers can be present to encourage reluctant readers. Children can pick what they would like to read and feel comfortable reading rather than prescribed books. From January to September 2022, there were 149 K-3 participants in this program. Names of Districts and School: East Penn School District County of Districts and Schools: Lehigh |
