Description

This hour long, monthly after-school program (September-April) is offered for children in first through fourth grades. Written by Mary Pope Osborne, Magic Tree House is one of the best-selling chapter books of all time! Come travel with Jack & Annie as we discover different cultures, times and places. Each month we explore a different Magic Tree House book with a variety of book related activities. Multiple copies of the monthly pick are ordered from our county library system so each participant has access to a copy during the program and to check out afterwards.

When the children arrive, there is an ice breaker activity such as a connect-the-dots, look & find, or a coloring page that relates to the story. As they eat a snack (usually tied to a theme in the book), I read aloud several chapters. This allows them to follow along with word recognition and helps promote listening skills. We review vocabulary, have discussion and learn new things from the accompanying Research Guide/Fact Tracker books also from this series.

We conclude the program with an activity or craft that complements and connects to the literature. This can be arts & crafts, a STEM activity or having a special guest.
This has been an ongoing program for more than 10 years and remains popular!
