Cost and Funding:

Partnership:

Northeast Regional Weinberg Food Bank

Description:

The library partners with a local food bank to distribute food to the local community. We distribute the food on the last Friday of the month but that is just our preference. At its peak, we were serving over 100 families during this program.
We partner with the Northeast Regional Weinberg Food Bank who will send a truck to deliver pallets of food – produce, dairy, meat, dry goods, canned goods etc. They ask for an estimate on the numbers of families we are expected to serve so that they know how much to deliver. Each person who registers is required to fill out paperwork by the PA Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Food Assistance but it just asks for basic contact information should there be a recall in any of the items distributed.
We recommend having a designated area for the food distribution as well as volunteers to help set up and open boxes. Generally we let people “take what they need” but we will put “one item per family” signs on high demand items such as meat and dairy. If we have any leftover items, we will redistribute them to other local food banks or community groups.
