Library Type Public Cost and Funding: $0 Partnership: Wildlife Partner Description: General overview of Monarch Butterfly release program For the EPL Summer Reading Club closing event in 2020, Michelle Ayello - a volunteer who raises butterflies from caterpillars - brought hatching chrysalides (chrysalises) to the library lawn for an educational release adventure. Collection materials and displays on the subject were provided for checkout in the weeks leading up to, and following the event. The multi-generational program was held safely outdoors and socially distant during the pandemic, and met important environmental education, STEM, and hands-on experience goals. This effective event served 100 people of all ages, who heard about the release through library fliers, displays, website, Facebook, and word of mouth. Due to relationship building and networking by the staff, this event was free, both to the library, and the attendees. This was a popular event, received with the audience’s verbal enthusiasm and excited engagement. Attendees asked for us to repeat the event in the future. The program supported the PA Forward basic literacy goal. The goal is “developing foundational competency including reading, writing, math, job application assistance, and overall life-skill development. Also includes STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) knowledge building on basic skills and concepts.” The PA Early Learning Standard of environment was met as well. “Infants and toddlers will demonstrate an increased understanding of living and non-living things in the immediate and surrounding environment.” The program is replicable in other communities similar to ours, involving fairly common insect metamorphosis, and the important issue of habitat loss in our local ecosystems. Some libraries might need to pay a nominal fee to a Wildlife conservatory or butterfly refuge if no local volunteer is present. |
