Going alone can be hard, especially when you are attending a large conference. Knowing just one other person can help make it less intimidating. The PaLA Conference Buddy Program is a simple and informal way to help less-experienced conference attendees build social and professional connections, learn more about Pennsylvania Library Association, and maximize their conference experience.
Are You a Conference Rookie? Request a buddy for the conference to receive tips on planning for the conference, attending sessions, navigating the exhibits and expanding your network!
- Pennsylvania Library Association membership is not required for rookies.
- Complete the application form by Monday, August 17 to request a Conference Coach.
Are You an Experienced Conference Attendee? Volunteer as a Conference Coach to be paired with a Conference Rookie and share your experience and professional network.
- Coaches must be current members of the Pennsylvania Library Association.
- Schedule a time to meet one-on-one soon after your arrival at the conference, Coaches must be able to dedicate time in their conference schedule to the buddy relationship.
- Complete the application form by Monday, August 17 to help out a Rookie and serve as a Conference Coach.
How It Works
This commitment is only for the Pennsylvania Library Association Conference at the Hilton Harrisburg, October 4-7, 2026.
The Pennsylvania Library Association Membership Committee will pair participants and send conference buddy assignments approximately two (2) weeks before the conference.
To make sure that the PaLA Conference Buddy program is a valuable experience for both Rookie and Coach, we ask that you commit to the following activities:
- Connect with each other via phone or email at least once before the conference,
- Schedule a time to meet one-on-one soon after your arrival at the conference,
- Designate a meeting place before the Welcome Reception or other conference event (chapter dine-out, coffee hours, luncheons, etc.) so you can arrive at the event together.
The Conference Coach is also asked to commit to:
- Take the lead on reaching out to schedule the initial meeting,
- Introduce your buddy to other Pennsylvania Library Association members and conference attendees,
- Offer suggestions and give advice on getting the most out of conference attendance and Pennsylvania Library Association membership, and
- Meet at least one additional time with your buddy to see how their conference is going and to answer any other questions they may have.
