Honor Flight Pittsburgh arranges tours of the memorials in Washington D.C. for veterans of American wars. Join us for an afternoon while we make cards that will be distributed to these veterans during their next trip. Limited card making supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. For teens and adults.

Teen and Youth Services Librarian, Carrie Lowery runs a weekly Sensory Storytime for children ages 2-6. It is a welcoming and friendly environment. During the storytime, children and caregivers listen to stories, sing songs, and do rhymes in a unique way. Following the storytime, the children can play with sensory activities. Ms. Carrie also brings in community partners such as occupational and physical therapists to speak to the parents. She has also brought in a service dog to meet the children and learn about safety when approaching unfamiliar animals

As a part of the local community for more than 40 years, Outreach Teen & Family Services provides counseling services and programs to support the mental health needs of youth in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Our focus is one of empowerment, prevention, education and early intervention. The 1 hour presentation will include insight into children and teens lives with social media as well as strategies for parents to help their children navigate the social media sphere safely. It is our goal that parents will leave the presentation feeling confident that they can empower their child(ren) to use social media responsibility, safely, and in a manner that benefits their mental wellness.

Please join PHEAA’s Higher Education Access Partner for Allegheny County, Amy Sawdey, as she presents information on the financial aid application process, what types of aid are available for students, and strategies to start thinking about affordability before getting ready to apply for post-secondary school admission. Time will be built into the presentation to allow you to ask any questions you may have regarding the financial aid process.

Curious about shark anatomy? The dogfish shark, a member of the class Chondrichthyes, is a popular dissection specimen in general biology and anatomy courses. It is useful for learning about cartilaginous fish and for studying comparative and vertebrate anatomy. Join us as an ELANCO staff member dissects a dogfish shark specimen in front of a live audience with a Q&A session afterwards. Build your STEM knowledge by learning basic concepts of anatomy, organ structure & function, similarities and differences among species (especially sharks & humans), dissection techniques, and more. Program is for teens and adults, and registration is required.

Join neighbors, friends, and special guests for a Constitution Day Party! This event will feature a potluck lunch,* a costume contest,** and a dramatic reading of the entire Constitution***. *Please bring a dish to share; but if you don’t want to bring anything, don’t let that stop you from coming! **Wear your favorite historical costume, if you like. One adult and one child will receive a prize for the best costume. ***Students from Garden Spot High School, members the library’s Teen Tuesday Clubs, our special guests, library staff, and adults and children who attend will all be invited to read segments of the Constitution aloud. Build your civic & social literacy by engaging with your local elected officials and members of your community and by learning how the creation of the United States Constitution changed society forever.

Abington Community Library partnered with the Rail-Trail of NEPA to present a Winter Solstice Walk at the Countryside Conservancy Trail. Attendees prior to the event created wet felted lanterns that were lit with battery operated tea lights. We had a Winter Solstice Storytime and enjoyed a walk through the trail on the night of the Winter Solstice and enjoyed hot chocolate afterwards. Around 50 people attended.

VolunTeens is service focused club for young people ages 13 and up. We gather to complete projects and activities to support local and nationwide charities and organizations. Activities have included: creating decorations for library events, encouragement cards for community members, and making toys for an animal shelter. If the young person cannot make it to one of our scheduled events, there are self-directed volunteer activities available. They can create content for the teen-specific library social media and blog or write book reviews.
