Sensory Friendly Flicks

September 8, 2025

Join us in the Community Room for Sensory Friendly Flicks, a Wednesday film program for adults with disabilities and their supporters. We keep the lights on, turn the sound down, and encourage folks to talk and move to their hearts’ content as we screen some old favorites and new classics. We also set up arts-and-crafts activities and puzzles in the back of the Community Room and make fidget objects available throughout the duration of the program. Seating starts at 10:00 AM. Movies start at 10:10 AM, unless otherwise noted, and end shortly before 12:00 PM. And food and drink are permitted, so feel free to bring your own snacks. Registration is not required, but please contact us if you have any questions about participating.

Cookbook Club

September 2, 2025

Our next Cookbook Club gathering will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 5:30 pm. We had a wonderful turnout for our first session last month; and we are looking forward to more fun taste-testing in September. This month’s Cookbook selection is “From the Garden.” Stop in the library to select your recipe. Then on the day of the gathering, make one round of your recipe to bring in for our taste-testing and discussion. (Cooking is never judged; only the elements of the recipe; ie. was it easy, would you make this for an event, would you recommend to a friend, etc.) For questions about this new Club, please call and speak with library staff at 724-745-4300. Youth are welcome to cook with and attend with a grownup. We encourage time together in the kitchen! Any participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. (Cookbook Club is a multi-generational program at Chartiers-Houston Community Library)

Celebrate Children’s Book Week, May 5-10th!

September 2, 2025

Children’s Book Week is a national week-long event that celebrates books for young readers. 2025 is the 106th anniversary of this beloved program, and this year’s event slogan is An Ocean of Stories. This slogan celebrates the vast, collective ocean populated by the stories we read, share, and tell. Come into the Chartiers-Houston Community Library any time during the week and celebrate with us. We will have our regular storytimes (Monday @ 5:30 pm & Thursday @ 11:30 am), and coloring pages with this year’s theme. Ask how your child can make a Mother’s Day card or picture gift. You can also celebrate using all the amazing free resources at EveryChildaReader.net. Follow #StoryOcean online for more.

Halloween Costume Swap

August 28, 2025

Our Halloween Costume Swap serves as an opportunity to reuse and repurpose gently worn Halloween costumes, be creative, and save families money. Community members will drop off gently used costumes they no longer need during a two week window at the library. A voucher will be given in exchange for each costume contributed. The Swap Day will be held the Saturday after the end of the drop-off window (about two weeks before Halloween), and community members can stop in all day long with their vouchers to claim some new-to-them costumes! They may take up to as many costumes as they dropped off, indicated on their voucher. Any costumes left at the end of the day will be made available the following week for free, while supplies last, on a first-come, first serve basis.
