Winter Solstice Walk
Abington Community Library partnered with the Rail-Trail of NEPA to present a Winter Solstice Walk at the Countryside Conservancy Trail. Attendees prior to the event created wet felted lanterns that were lit with battery operated tea lights. We had a Winter Solstice Storytime and enjoyed a walk through the trail on the night of the Winter Solstice and enjoyed hot chocolate afterwards. Around 50 people attended.

VolunTeens is service focused club for young people ages 13 and up. We gather to complete projects and activities to support local and nationwide charities and organizations. Activities have included: creating decorations for library events, encouragement cards for community members, and making toys for an animal shelter. If the young person cannot make it to one of our scheduled events, there are self-directed volunteer activities available. They can create content for the teen-specific library social media and blog or write book reviews.

Partnering with a local school for deaf and hard of hearing children, we offer signing classes for parents and caregivers and their young children. The class is taught by a certified teacher at the school and we incorporate the signs and lessons into our Baby Storytimes

“I Am Me” Self-Portrait Storytime
Jenkintown Library promotes basic literacy as well as confidence and self-assurance with our “I Am Me” Self-Portrait Storytime. Attendees listen to a reading of “I Am Me” by Susan Verde, and then celebrate themselves by making fun self-portraits.

For the entire month of June, the Haverford Township Free Library designed a number of its programs to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month. In addition to the library’s regular book groups, HTFL had its Tween Book Group read Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe and a specially created Adult Book group read Real Queer America by Samantha Allen. Additionally, the staff laid out colored stickies for patrons to write supportive and positive reinforcing messages as part of a Rainbow Wall of Inspiration for the whole community to see. And last, the library held a special Parenting Panel where parents and caregivers would come and discuss ways to explore healthy gender exploration for children.
